Kids Acting & Modeling Headshots in the South Bay

By Randy Schwartz · Headshots & Portraits

If you've been searching for kids headshots near me in the South Bay of Los Angeles, whether for acting, modeling, commercial work or simply getting started, the photographer you choose matters. Your child's headshot needs to look professional, but more importantly, it still needs to look like your child.

I photograph kids and teens from my Torrance studio, working with families throughout the South Bay and Los Angeles. Sessions are relaxed and active, with plenty of direction but without forcing kids into expressions or poses that don't feel like them. My background is in commercial advertising photography, where directing people, creating engaging expressions and knowing when to catch the moment between moments are part of the job. I bring that same approach to every kids headshot session.

A Headshot Session Built Around Your Child

Before the session, we'll talk about what your child needs the photographs for, whether that's acting, modeling, commercial work or a first set of professional headshots. If you already have requirements from an agent, manager, casting service or modeling agency, bring them along and we'll plan around them. Once they're here, I spend some time getting to know them too. Music, sports, movies, school, whatever gets them talking and out of the mindset that they're supposed to perform for the camera.

Music, Movement and Room to Be Themselves

We have music in the studio and can usually find just about anything your child wants to hear. More importantly, I don't expect kids to stand on a mark and hold the same expression while I photograph them. We keep them moving, talking and engaged. Sometimes that means changing position. Sometimes it's a conversation. Sometimes it's catching the expression immediately after the expression they thought they were supposed to make. That's usually where the good stuff lives.

Direction Without Over-Posing

Kids don't need to arrive knowing how to pose. That's my job. Every child has a different comfort level in front of the camera, so the direction changes with them. I might adjust posture, eye direction, expression or energy, but the goal isn't to turn them into someone else. It's to get them comfortable enough that their own personality starts showing up. Acting, Modeling & Commercial Headshots

Different opportunities can call for different photographs. Acting headshots often put more emphasis on expression, personality and a clear view of the face. Modeling and commercial images may give us more room for movement, wardrobe, body language and range. If your child is pursuing more than one kind of work, we can plan the session to create useful options rather than trying to make one photograph do everything. Not sure which direction makes sense? That's something we can figure out together before the session.

Retouching That Still Looks Like Your Child

Kids generally don't need much retouching, and I prefer to keep it that way. Most of the work is small: stray hairs, temporary blemishes when appropriate, color balance, contrast and other finishing adjustments. I also correct optical and lens distortion when necessary so facial proportions remain natural. The finished photograph should look like the child who is going to walk into the audition or meeting, not a digitally rebuilt version of them.

Quick Turnaround for Kids Who Don't Stop Growing

Acting and modeling opportunities don't always arrive with much notice, so finished selections are turned around quickly. We'll review the images and help narrow down the photographs that are doing the best job. Kids also change faster than adults. Hair changes, faces mature, teeth change and sometimes six months makes a surprisingly big difference. If your child's appearance has changed enough that the headshot no longer represents them accurately, it's probably time for an update. If you still offer the discounted repeat-client rate through age 18, add the current details here.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kids Headshots

How old does my child need to be for a professional headshot?
We work with children of different ages. Sessions with younger children naturally move differently than sessions with teens, so we adjust the pace, direction and expectations to the child in front of us.
What should my child wear to their headshot session?
Simple clothing generally keeps the attention where it belongs: on your child's face and expression. Bring a few options rather than trying to make the final wardrobe decision at home. We can look at everything together and choose what photographs best.
How many photos will we receive?
The number of finished images depends on the session you choose. We'll photograph plenty of variety during the session, help you review the results, and prepare your selected images for their intended use.
Does my child need acting or modeling experience?
Not at all. We photograph kids who are already working as well as children putting together their first set of professional images. They don't need to know what to do before they arrive.
Where is your studio?
Our studio is in Torrance, California, serving families throughout Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, El Segundo, Palos Verdes and the greater South Bay and Los Angeles area.
