Acting & Modeling Headshots in the South Bay
If you're looking for acting or modeling headshots without making the trek across Los Angeles, my studio is right here in Torrance.
I work with actors and models throughout the South Bay, from people putting together their first set of professional photographs to experienced talent updating their portfolio. The goal isn't simply to make you look good. We want to create photographs that get someone's attention, show some range and still look like you.
My background is in commercial photography, where I've spent years directing actors and models for advertising shoots. I bring that same approach into my headshot sessions: plenty of direction, lots of movement and enough variety to create photographs that don't all look like they were made against the same wall on the same afternoon.
Living in the South Bay of Los Angeles, Randy photographs actors and models locally in our 4500 square foot Torrance studio. His background in commercial photography means he's spent years directing people for advertising shoots, and he brings that same energy and experience to acting and modeling sessions. The goal is to create photographs that get someone's attention while still feeling honest to who you are.
Acting Headshots That Give Casting Something to Work With
An acting headshot needs to do more than show what you look like. It should give someone a reason to stop for a second and look a little longer.
Sometimes that's a bright, open commercial expression. Sometimes it's quieter and more theatrical. Often the difference between the two is surprisingly small. A change in the eyes, posture or expression can completely change what someone reads into a photograph.
That's a big part of what I'm looking for when I photograph actors. I'm not interested in finding one good expression and repeating it for the entire session. We'll move through different ideas, expressions and energy and see where you naturally fit.
If you already have representation, bring whatever direction your agent or manager has given you. If you're just getting started, we'll talk about the kinds of roles you're pursuing and create a range that gives you somewhere to start.
Modeling Headshots & Portfolio Images
Acting and modeling photographs overlap, but they don't always have the same job.
With acting headshots, we're often concentrating heavily on the eyes, expression and what the photograph suggests about you. With modeling, we can open things up. Body language, movement, wardrobe and overall presentation can become a bigger part of the photograph.
That gives us more room to work.
Depending on what you're pursuing, we can create clean agency-style headshots, commercial images, tighter beauty photographs or wider portraits that show more of your look and how you move in front of the camera.
My commercial photography background comes into play here quite a bit. I've spent years photographing people for advertising, where the direction often needs to feel natural while still being very intentional. That's essentially what we're doing here, just with you as the brand.
If you're approaching an agency or already have representation, bring their submission requirements or any specific photographs they've asked you to update. We'll build around what you actually need rather than trying to check off some generic list of modeling shots.
As an example, the actors above came to Randy when they were just getting started in acting. They lived in the South Bay but still wanted the kind of headshots they would expect to get in Hollywood, without having to make the trip across Los Angeles.
That's something we hear from clients quite a bit. Having a professional studio here in Torrance means you don't have to travel across town to get a headshot that can compete in the Los Angeles acting and modeling market.
Just as important, we want the experience to be something you actually enjoy. We want you to be you in the photographs, not some version of yourself you think you're supposed to become for the camera. Hopefully, 20 years from now, you can look back at these photographs and remember not only how you looked, but how good you felt making them.
One Session. A Lot of Different Looks.
One advantage of working in a 4500 square foot studio is that we don't have to make every photograph in the same corner of our space.
We can move between different backgrounds, sets and lighting styles during your session. We can shoot something clean and bright, change direction for a darker theatrical look, work on greenscreen when it makes sense, or step outside for natural light and an entirely different environment.
That variety we offer is especially useful if you're building your first acting or modeling portfolio. I generally recommend starting with around four or five strong finished photographs, but I don't want them to look like five photographs from the same afternoon with a different shirt.
The goal is to give each image a reason to exist in your first portfolio. I want to know the kinds of roles you're interested in pursuing and what you're drawn to visually. I often ask clients to send me images or screenshots of actors, models or photographs they like and appreciate. They don't have to be images we copy exactly. They give me a sense of what you're responding to and can give us a great starting point for creating something that's yours.
Sometimes the changes are substantial. Other times it's simply different light, wardrobe, expression or body language. Either way, we can create a collection that gives you options for different submissions without making everything feel repetitive.
You Don't Need to Know How to Pose
One of the most common things I hear before a session is some version of, “I'm terrible in front of a camera.”
That's okay. You're not supposed to arrive knowing what looks good from my side of the lens. That's my job.
I'll direct you throughout the session, but I don't want everything to feel posed. We'll work with posture, head and shoulder position, expression and eye contact, but we'll also use movement, conversation and whatever else gets you out of thinking about the camera quite so much.
This is especially important with actors and models because a technically perfect position isn't necessarily an interesting photograph. Sometimes a very small change in your eyes or expression does more than changing your entire pose.
And if something isn't working, you don't have to figure that out. I can see it. We'll change it and keep moving.

What Kind of Acting or Modeling Headshots Do You Need?
You don't necessarily need to know the answer before you come in. That's something we can figure out together.
Commercial Acting Headshots
These tend to be brighter, approachable and more energetic. Think advertising, television commercials and roles where personality and connection are important.
Theatrical Acting Headshots
These can be quieter, more serious or more character-driven. The goal isn't simply to look dramatic. It's to create a photograph with enough going on behind the eyes that someone wants to know more.
Modeling and Agency Submissions
If you're approaching a modeling agency, we'll keep their specific requirements in mind. That might mean clean, straightforward images that show what you actually look like, along with photographs that show more range, body language and presence.
Portfolio Updates
If you've already been working for a while, we don't need to start over. Bring your current portfolio and tell me what's missing. We can concentrate on adding photographs that give you something you don't already have.
Commercial and Lifestyle Images
These can move beyond the traditional headshot and feel more like advertising photography. We can work with movement, wardrobe, different environments and wider compositions to create images that show more personality and range.
If you're not sure which category you fall into, don't worry about it. Most people need some combination of these rather than five completely separate kinds of photographs.
What Is an Acting or Modeling Headshot Session Like?
I don't expect you to walk through the door knowing exactly what to do. In fact, I'd rather you didn't spend the week before your session practicing expressions in the mirror.
We'll usually start by talking about what you need, the kinds of roles or opportunities you're pursuing and any reference images you've sent me. We'll also go through your wardrobe together and decide what makes sense for the different photographs we want to create.
We'll also look at photographs as we go. If something is working, we can push it further. If it isn't, we move on. There are no bonus points for spending 20 minutes trying to force an idea that isn't happening.
By the end, we should have created a range of photographs that still look and feel like you, rather than a collection of poses you performed for the camera.
